Project Title

 

A virtual reality enabled adaptive interaction for cognitive rehabilitation for People with Mild Cognitive Impairment.
Objectives

Dementia is a progressive degenerative brain syndrome that involves memory impairment in older adults caused by damage to brain cells and their connections. The most common cause of dementia is Alzheimer’s Disease (AD). Cognitive rehabilitation (CR) or training based on this brain plasticity concept has been found to improve cognitive functions. Recent studies have also confirmed such improvements through the use of computerized CR training programs, offering further evidence of the beneficial effects of CR on memory and attention.

This project will develop a Virtual Reality (VR) based adaptive interface for CR of people with Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) and early stage AD. Specifically it will 1) investigate the acceptance and technological barriers of the emerging 3D technologies (e.g. Wii control, 3D TVs, Kinect) for MCI/AD patients; 2) create patient cognitive models and design monitoring and interaction mechanisms in a VR facility, in the context of VR cognitive training exercises; 3) develop algorithms for personalised and adaptive in-home cognitive rehabilitation based on interactions and cognitive performance analysis; 4) implement and evaluate the VR based interface and associated models and methods using the UPM’s Smart House Living Lab with potential real users through pilot trials.

Planned Secondments

 

  • 1st: Istituto Nazionale di Riposo e Cura Per Anziani (INRCA), Italy, to engage with early-stage AD patients to establish their characteristics and needs.
  • 2nd: Centre for Research and Technology Hellas / Information Technologies Institute (CERTH/ITI), to investigate the use of visual analytic techniques for cognitive rehabilitation analysis.
  • 3rd: De Montfort University (DMU), UK, to investigate the use of existing context awareness and behaviour analysis technologies.
  • 4th: The Accord Group (ACCORD), UK, to test the usefulness of the system with possible end users.
