Universal open platform and reference Specification for Ambient Assisted Living
As the European population ages, more support is needed with fewer hands to cater for their needs.
The potential benefits of Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) solutions are already clearly recognized, and societal trends indicate that they will be attractive to an increasing number of people. But adoption of such solutions has so far been limited.
universAAL aims to reduce barriers to adoption and to promote the development and widespread uptake of innovative AAL solutions. It will benefit end-users (i.e. elderly people and people with disabilities, their carers and family members) by making new solutions affordable and simple to configure. It will benefit solution providers by making it easier and cheaper to create innovative new AAL services or to adapt existing ones using a compositional approach based on already developed
components, services and external systems. To address this, universAAL will produce an open platform that provides a standardized approach
making it technically feasible and economically viable to develop AAL solutions.
Life Supporting Technologies has a major role in the development of the project, including the definition of the Reference Architecture, the implementation of the platforms and the development of some final-user services. LST is also leading the workpackage dedicated to the “Verification and Validation” that will assess both technical and usability aspects.
