Samanta Villanueva

Samanta Villanueva Mascato received the B.S. in Telecommunications Engineering and the M.Sc. degree in Telemedicine and Biomedical Engineering from Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM), Madrid, Spain, in 2014. Her work is mainly oriented to the improvement of the quality of life of people with cognitive impairments and neurodegenerative disease. She is focused on healthcare sector environments, especially in the fields of mHealth, eHealth, home care and telemedicine. Her areas of expertise include the design, development and evaluation of ICT-based solutions, usability, user-center design, data analysis, and the design and development of mobile applications, webs and graphical user interfaces.
She has collaborated on several funded R&D projects, among them, a project to build a mHealth platform for Parkinson’s Disease training and rehabilitation at patient’s home based on music and External Rhythmic Cueing (ERC) and Rhythmic Auditory Stimulation (RAS). Other research topics include the development of applications to support and prolong the independent living of older adults in their living environments and design and development of several home rehabilitation tools for patients with psychological and cognitive impairments.
She is currently a researcher and senior developer at Life Supporting Technologies Group in UPM dealing with information and communication technologies (ICT) in the area of e-Health. Her present research activity is focused on the design and development of e-Health and m-Health solutions, cognitive training and management solution for Chronic Disease, especially Parkinson disease. She has participated in several European projects: HOOP (EIT Health), that aimed to build a remote rehabilitation platform based on music therapy and Rhythm Auditory Stimulation for Parkinson disease patients. PD_manager (H2020), that aimed to build a mHealth platform for the automatic assessment and management of motor and non-motor systems for the integral care of Parkinson’s disease patients and CogWatch (FP7), that aimed to build a personalized system to enhance the rehabilitation of stroke patients. Currently, she is working in ACTIVAGE (H2020), developing solutions for Active and Healthy Ageing, Better@Home (EIT Health), connecting digital technology to take hospital care into the home, FAITH (H2020), developing a nutrition application for survivors of breast cancer patients and MED Food TTHubs (PRIMA), developing a nutrition profile analysis module for traceability of Mediterranean foods in the agro-food sector.
